Most bars are junk food dressed as health food
Most energy, protein or meal bars are marketed as a healthy meal or snack alternative – and they're plastered with health claims.
But if you take a quick look at their ingredients, you’re likely to find a huge list of bulking agents, sugar alcohols/sweeteners, emulsifiers, gums, thickeners, humectants, starch, acidifying agents and artificial flavours.
These ingredients are used to make ultra-processed foods tastier, sweeter and smoother, whilst providing a better mouthfeel, bulking them out and helping them hold a specific shape.
Okay, but what’s the problem?
While these additives are all officially deemed safe and authorised to be used in foods in the UK, they provide no nutritional benefits whatsoever. At best, they’re nutritionally void. At worst, they could also:
- Set off cravings for more sweet foods and make it hard to stay on track
